Ganapath

Ganapath: A Hero is Born is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language dystopian sports action film. Vikas Bahl wrote and directed it, and also produced it alongside Jackky Bhagnani, Vashu Bhagnani, and Deepshikha Deshmukh. Tiger Shroff plays a dual role, with Kriti Sanon, Elli AvrRam, and Rahman in supporting roles. Amitabh Bachchan was reported to appear but does not appear in the final cut. The film hit theaters on 20 October 2023. Critics gave it mixed-to-negative reviews, and it bombed at the box office.

The story is set in 2070. A devastating war has split the world with a giant wall. The rich live in Silver City, ruled by Dalini, while the poor struggle in a ruined city controlled by Silver City. Guddu, who lives in Silver City, works for John, one of Dalini’s henchmen. John runs boxing matches where the rich bet money. One day, John asks Guddu to take his girlfriend Dimple to a nightclub. Dimple makes a move on Guddu, and John catches them. He buries them alive. Guddu survives and is told by Kaizad to go to the poor city and find Shiva, a combat trainer.

Guddu learns he is actually Ganapath, a legendary savior of the poor, as foretold by Maharishi Dalapathi. He trains under Shiva and his ally Jassi. Guddu eventually embraces his identity as Ganapath. He tricks John, Dalini, and their men into thinking he is on their side. As a skilled fighter, he wins matches for them, pretending to Jassi and Shiva that he does not care about their cause. After winning most of his fights, Guddu convinces John and Dalini’s associate to bet all their money on his opponent in the final match, saying he plans to lose. He also gets them to let the poor bet their savings, so John and his crew can steal that money too. But this is Guddu’s plan for revenge.

While freeing Jassi from captivity, Guddu secretly tells her to urge the poor to bet their savings on the match. In the fight, Guddu easily dominates the first two rounds. In the third, he fakes defeat, but then learns John has actually bet on the opponent. Guddu makes a comeback and wins, causing huge losses for John and Dalini. He then reveals his actions on live TV, watched by both rich and poor, and confesses that Shiva is his biological father. Guddu says he has given the poor a chance to challenge the rich with their winnings, now that he is Ganapath. He challenges Dalini to show himself. Dalini appears as Guddu’s exact double

Lore & Background

Set in the year 2070, the film depicts a world divided by a towering wall after a destructive war. The rich live in Silver City, led by Dalini, while the poor struggle in a destroyed city controlled by Silver City. The protagonist, Guddu, lives in Silver City and works for John, a henchman who runs boxing matches for the wealthy. After being betrayed and buried alive by John, Guddu survives and is directed to the poor city to meet Shiva, a combat trainer. There, he learns he is actually Ganapath, a legendary savior prophesied by Maharishi Dalapathi. Guddu undergoes training and eventually deceives John and Dalini, winning matches while pretending to be uninterested in the poor's cause. In the final match, he orchestrates a plan that allows the poor to bet their savings, then stages a comeback victory that causes substantial losses to the rich. Guddu then reveals his true identity on live TV, challenging Dalini, who appears as his exact double—an AI doppelgänger.

Reader's Guide

Ganapath: A Hero is Born is notable as a big-budget Indian dystopian film that attempted to blend sports action with social commentary, but it was widely panned by critics and audiences. The film's significance lies in its ambitious world-building and the dual role of Tiger Shroff, yet it was criticized for a clichéd storyline, poor visual effects, and a predictable second half. Critics noted its borrowing of tropes from films like The Hunger Games, Mad Max, Dune, and KGF, and it was included in multiple year-end lists of the worst Hindi films of 2023. The film's commercial failure and negative reception highlight the challenges of executing a futuristic narrative in Indian cinema, though it remains a reference point for dystopian genre experiments in Bollywood.
